Brazilian Senate celebrates 100 years of the Brazilian Nursing Association

The Brazilian Senate held a special session to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Brazilian Nursing Association (ABEn Nacional). Founded on August 12, 1926, by faculty and students from the Anna Nery Nursing School, the association was honored for its century of service.

In addition to the tributes, the session included debates regarding the professional valuation of nurses, focusing on issues such as the minimum wage floor, working hours, and public health policies. ABEn President Jacinta de Fátima Senna da Silva highlighted the organization's role in regulating the nursing career and emphasized the importance of mobilizing youth from technical training through graduation to engage in political and social practice.

Speakers during the ceremony, including Senator Paulo Paim and Senator Zenaide Maia, noted the essential role of nursing across all sectors of Brazilian society, from urban centers to indigenous and quilombola communities. Representatives also recalled the association's historical involvement in the struggle for redemocratization during the military dictatorship.
