Brazilian Senate Commission approves higher education transparency bill

The Brazilian Senate's Education Commission has approved Bill PL 4.600/2025, which aims to increase transparency regarding the accreditation and regularity of higher education institutions and courses.

The bill, authored by Senator Jussara Lima, proposes amendments to the National Education Guidelines and Bases Law (LDB). It mandates that the government disclose authorization, recognition, and renewal acts for higher education courses in a clear, simple language via electronic media.

In addition to institutional accreditation status, the law would require the disclosure of validity periods, ongoing supervision processes, curriculum details, teacher qualifications, infrastructure, and evaluation criteria. Educational institutions would also be responsible for informing students of their operational status before the start of each academic term.

If no appeal is filed to the Senate Plenary, the proposal will move to the Chamber of Deputies. The new regulations would take effect 180 days after the law is published.
