Brazilian Senate to debate end of 6x1 work scale

Senate President Davi Alcolumbre has scheduled the first plenary discussion of Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) 221/2019 for next Tuesday (6th). The proposal seeks to end the 6x1 work scale—where employees work six days followed by one day of rest—and reduce the maximum weekly working hours from 44 to 40 hours without salary reductions.

The PEC, which was previously approved by the Chamber of Deputies in late May, establishes a transition period of up to 14 months. Under the proposed rules, the weekly workload would gradually decrease to 42 hours sixty days after promulgation, reaching 40 hours after one year. The amendment also mandates two days of paid weekly rest, with one day preferably falling on a Sunday.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed confidence in the Senate's approval, noting that the measure is a priority for his government. To pass, the PEC requires approval in two rounds of voting in the Senate, with at least three-fifths of the senators (49 out of 81) supporting it in each round. The discussion sessions are expected to continue through Wednesday (7th) and Thursday (8th).
