Brazilian Senate to inspect indigenous health and security in Amazonas
Senator Damares Alves will conduct a mission in Amazonas from Wednesday to Saturday to evaluate public policies for indigenous populations and investigate reports of threats in border regions. The visit, organized by the Permanent Subcommittee on Yanomami Indigenous Peoples, includes inspections of health units in Manaus and São Gabriel da Cachoeira.
The mission aims to assess the effectiveness of federal services, particularly regarding health crises involving malnutrition and malaria. Recent data from the Ministry of Health indicated approximately 6,800 malaria cases in the first half of 2026. Additionally, the subcommittee will investigate reports of armed men in the 'Cabeça do Cachorro' region near the Colombian border, where indigenous organizations have reported threats to local residents.
