Brazilian Senate to vote on Public Security PEC this week

The Brazilian Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) is scheduled to vote on pending points regarding the Public Security Constitutional Amendment (PEC) this Wednesday, November 14. Senator Camilo Santana, the government leader in the Senate, announced that the session aims to resolve opposition amendments that have previously stalled the proposal.

The PEC is a priority for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration. It seeks to reorganize Brazil's security landscape by incorporating the Unified Public Security System (Susp) into the Constitution. Key provisions include expanding the federal government's role in security coordination—a responsibility currently concentrated at the state level—and increasing the authority of the Federal Police and the Federal Highway Police in combating criminal factions.

Additionally, the proposal includes stricter regulations for leaders of criminal organizations. The rapporteur, Senator Rogério Carvalho, has maintained much of the version previously approved by the Chamber of Deputies to expedite the process. Once the CCJ concludes its analysis, the government intends to file a request to accelerate the matter's progression to the Senate plenary.
