Brazilian Senator Ciro Nogueira’s Credit Card Bills Paid by Deputies in Corruption Probe

Federal deputies Julio Arcoverde (PP‑PI) and Átila Lira (PP‑PI) paid credit‑card invoices of Senator Ciro Nogueira, the national president of the Progressistas (PP), in June 2024. Arcoverde settled a BRB card bill of R$13,693 on 19 June, while Lira paid a R$3,457 invoice for the same card. The payments were uncovered by the Federal Police in Operation Compliance Zero, which investigates possible fraud, corruption and money‑laundering involving Nogueira and bank owner Daniel Vorcaro.

The police view the payments as an attempt to hide the true source of funds. Nogueira’s credit‑card statements show expenses—R$120,839 on the BRB card in June and similarly high amounts on other banks—that far exceed his official senatorial salary of R$46,366. Additional ties include Arcoverde’s former partnership with Nogueira in the company Seven‑Bar & Charutaria and the fact that Arcoverde’s son serves as a parliamentary aide to Nogueira with a monthly salary of R$12,360. In the same month, Nogueira made a trip to Lisbon financed by Vorcaro. Federal Police investigators say the interposition of third parties aims to obstruct tracking of money origins and destinations.
