Jaques Wagner faces pressure to step down as Senate government leader amid Master scandal

Senator Jaques Wagner, the government leader in Brazil's Senate, is under investigation in the Federal Police's Operation Compliance Zero, a probe into the Master bank scandal linked to financier Daniel Vorcão. On June 18, police executed search warrants at Wagner’s residences, seizing US $49,000 in cash and probing alleged receipt of a R$2.5 million apartment, frequent jet travel, and payments through a consultancy firm tied to his family.

Wagner told reporters he believes President Luiz Inácio Lula will keep him in the post, saying Lula called to express confidence. Vice‑president Geraldo Alckmin echoed that Lula will handle the matter well and stressed the Federal Police’s independence. Within the government and the PT, some allies urge Wagner to resign to avoid harming Lula’s re‑election campaign, while opposition figures, including Flávio Bolsonaro, are exploiting the case to criticize the administration.

The controversy has become a political dilemma for Lula less than two months before the campaign season, with the possibility that Wagner’s continued leadership could provide ammunition to opponents.
