Brazilian Senator urges vote on Central Bank autonomy and Pix protections

Senator Plínio Valério has called for the voting of Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) 65/2023, which aims to expand the operational and budgetary-financial autonomy of the Central Bank of Brazil.

Authored by Senator Vanderlan Cardoso, the proposal was approved by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) in June. Valério, who served as the rapporteur, included measures in the text to protect the Pix instant payment system. These measures seek to prevent the Central Bank from outsourcing the Pix system and from charging fees to individuals.

The senator noted that an agreement was previously made to vote on the matter in the Plenary following a 14-day period requested by the government, but the vote has not yet occurred. Valério argued that the electoral period should not delay the analysis, emphasizing the importance of defending the national currency and preserving international economic achievements.
