Brazilian Senate debates end to 6x1 work schedule

The Brazilian Senate has begun debating Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) 221/2019, which aims to end the 6x1 work schedule. The proposal seeks to reduce the maximum weekly working hours from 44 to 40, ensuring two paid days of rest per week, with one preferably on Sundays, without reducing worker salaries.

Senate President Davi Alcolumbre has indicated that the vote could take place as early as next week, potentially utilizing remote sessions to ensure a quorum. He noted that any formal request to accelerate the legislative process or bypass standard discussion intervals would be submitted to a plenary vote.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has actively championed the measure, framing it as a key commitment to workers' rights and quality of life. Conversely, opposition senators, including those aligned with Flávio Bolsonaro, are attempting to delay the vote until after the presidential elections, arguing that the timing is inappropriate for such a significant matter.

To pass, the PEC requires approval by at least 49 of the 81 senators in two separate voting rounds. The government is currently working to collect the necessary signatures to request a special calendar to expedite the process.
