Brazil election candidates disclose diverse assets and business ties to TSE
Various Brazilian political candidates have submitted their asset declarations to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) ahead of upcoming elections, revealing a wide range of wealth and financial interests.
Writer and presidential candidate Augusto Cury declared the highest assets among presidential contenders, totaling R$ 242.28 million, which includes significant loans and various business holdings. In contrast, businessman and candidate Alvinho Lira reported zero assets. Former football coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, running for Senate in Tocantins, declared R$ 3.77 million, primarily in real estate and luxury vehicles.
Other notable declarations include Clébio Jacaré, a candidate for federal deputy in Rio de Janeiro, who reported nearly R$ 12 million in cash and a total patrimony of R$ 57 million. State deputy Renato Câmara reported a nearly 200% increase in assets since 2022, reaching R$ 1.89 million. Governor Tarcísio de Freitas reported a R$ 354,646 increase in total assets compared to his 2022 declaration.
Controversies have also emerged regarding candidate assets and affiliations. Former minister João Roma is linked to an entrepreneur whose brokerage firm signed R$ 19.7 million in contracts with Banco Master. Additionally, a legal challenge has been filed against Cristiano Santos Hermógenes, brother of crime leader Marcinho VP, seeking to block his candidacy for state deputy in Rio de Janeiro due to alleged ties to organized crime.
