Brazilian Serie A second stage faces title race traps and relegation battles

The 2024 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A resumes its second half on Saturday, July 25, with three opening fixtures: Internacional vs Athletico-PR, Santos vs Chapecoense, and Vasco da Gama vs Mirassol. The remaining 19 rounds will decide the champion, continental competition berths and the four clubs destined for Série B in 2026.

Palmeiras cemented its lead with a 3‑0 victory over rival Flamengo, opening a seven‑point gap at the top of the table and positioning the club as the favorite for the title. However, the campaign’s calendar poses risks: Palmeiras also competes in the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil, potentially adding 13 matches if it reaches both finals, while Flamengo has fewer fixtures after exiting the national cup.

Additional challenges include forthcoming FIFA international windows in September and November, which could affect squad availability through player fatigue and travel. A rule change for the 2027 Libertadores reduces the number of Brazilian slots, intensifying the fight for continental qualification.
