Brazilian series 'Máscaras de Oxigênio' selected for Toronto International Film Festival

The Brazilian HBO Max miniseries Máscaras de Oxigênio Não Cairão Automaticamente has been chosen for the Primetime programme of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from 10 to 20 September in Canada. The drama, set in the 1980s, portrays the early HIV/AIDS epidemic in Brazil through the story of flight attendant Fernando, played by Johnny Massaro, who becomes involved in smuggling the first AZT tablets into the country.

The series is a co‑production between HBO and Morena Filmes, directed by Marcelo Gomes with Carol Minêm, and written by Leonardo Moreira and Patricia Corso. It has already earned recognition at the Berlin Festival (Queer Media Society Honorable Mention) and won Best TV Series and the Jury Youth Prize at the Luna de Valencia Festival, along with honours for screenplay and sound.
