Brazilian skateboarding sees growth through Olympic recognition
Brazilian skateboarding is experiencing a period of significant growth and recognition, according to six-time world champion Sandro Dias, known as Mineirinho. Reflecting on his career, which began in 1986, Dias noted that the sport once faced heavy prejudice and lacked local role models. He credited the inclusion of skateboarding in the Olympic Games as a primary driver for increased media visibility, professional opportunities, and social valuation of the discipline in Brazil.
Meanwhile, X Games champion Gui Khury highlighted the influence of Brazilian sporting icons, citing Gabriel Medina, Neymar, and Pelé as inspirations. While Khury has experience with wave pools and considered a career in surfing, he remains focused on professional skateboarding, where he has secured nine X Games gold medals.
