Brazilian sociologist Lejeune Mirhan dies at 73

Lejeune Mirhan, a 73‑year‑old Brazilian sociologist, professor, writer and geopolitical analyst, died on Thursday after a prolonged health struggle. He suffered a cardiac arrest while in the intensive‑care unit of Hospital Madre Teodora in Campinas, São Paulo.

Mirhan was a longtime professor at the Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba (Unimep) and twice led the Sindicato dos Sociólogos do Estado de São Paulo. A member of the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB), he was known for his analyses of the Middle East, imperialism and international relations, appearing regularly on TV 247 and in various publications. He authored dozens of books on Marxism, geopolitics and Arab history and founded the editorial house Apparte. His death prompted tributes from colleagues, students and political activists across Brazil.
