Brazilian sports entities face funding cuts and advertising bans

The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) is mobilizing to prevent a potential R$ 500 million loss in sports funding. The committee plans to send a delegation to Brasília to discuss an amendment to the Public Security PEC (Proposta de Emenda à Constituição), which currently includes a provision to redirect funds from betting companies—previously destined for sports entities—toward public security investments.

COB President Marco La Porta stated that the goal is not to vote against the PEC itself, but to remove the specific clause that redirects these resources. He emphasized that the committee is seeking to protect existing funds rather than requesting new ones.

Simultaneously, Senator Alessandro Vieira has requested a public hearing to debate Bill 2.470/2026, which proposes a ban on betting advertisements in Brazil. This legislation would also prohibit sports sponsorships, a major revenue stream for clubs and competitions. The bill suggests that the Ministry of Health could play a role in approving or suspending certain betting markets based on risk assessments.
