Brazilian states expand eye‑care programs, delivering glasses to residents in Espírito Santo and Rio Grande do Sul

In São Gabriel da Palha, Espírito Santo, the state health secretariat under Tyago Hoffmann implemented a decentralisation model that brought specialised eye‑care services closer to the population. The initiative culminated in a distribution of glasses that improved vision, autonomy and quality of life for local residents, reducing the need for travel to larger centres.

In Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, the Programme “Olhos do Amanhã” – created by state deputy Guilherme Pasin and executed with the municipal government, the Lions Club and regional development consortia – provided free glasses to fifteen children aged five to seven. Identified through the school health programme, the children now have better eyesight for learning and daily activities. Both efforts illustrate a broader push by Brazilian state authorities to regionalise health services and address vision problems that hinder education and wellbeing.
