Brazilian states pledge billions for infrastructure projects

Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues announced an investment of R$ 135.8 million to upgrade infrastructure in seven municipalities of Bahia. The plan includes road paving projects such as a 16.6‑km stretch in Esplanada, improvements to the BA‑290 corridor in Itanhém, and construction of a new school, aiming to boost mobility, create jobs and stimulate local economic growth.

Rio de Janeiro’s municipal government revealed a R$ 22.1 billion package to be spent through 2028 on health, mobility, security, urbanisation and flood‑prevention initiatives. Projects include the renewal of the city’s bus fleet with 5,000 new buses, the installation of 20,000 smart cameras, expansion of parks, and major road resurfacing under the “Asfalto Liso 3” program. The investment is intended to modernise the city, improve public safety and reduce flood risk in vulnerable neighbourhoods.

Both programmes reflect a broader push by Brazilian sub‑national authorities to channel large public funds into infrastructure, transport and urban resilience ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
