Researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine studied 43 father‑mother‑newborn triads treated in the public health system of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. They found that fathers who consumed larger amounts of ultra‑processed foods before conception had babies with higher birth weight and greater fat accumulation in the thighs and suprailiac region. These early body‑composition patterns are known risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases later in life.
The team, led by Professor Daniela Sartorelli, hypothesises that the additives in ultra‑processed foods trigger systemic inflammation in men, impairing sperm quality and altering epigenetic marks such as methylation of the IGF‑II gene, which influences fetal growth. The study is the first to demonstrate a direct association between paternal ultra‑processed food consumption and newborn body composition.
These findings broaden the focus of prenatal nutrition from mothers alone to include paternal dietary habits, suggesting that pre‑conception diet counseling could become part of public‑health strategies to reduce future disease risk.
