Brazilian Study Introduces New Teaching Sequence for Logical‑Mathematical Reasoning

Researchers at the Instituto Federal da Paraíba (IFPB) designed a four‑lesson didactic sequence for 6th‑grade students aimed at developing logical‑mathematical reasoning and numeric thought. The proposal, based on Zabala’s framework and aligned with Brazil’s National Common Curriculum (BNCC), guides pupils through reading, writing, comparing, ordering and representing natural and rational numbers in decimal form, as well as solving related problems.

A separate thesis from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, authored by Natan Leite Lima, investigates constructible numbers by ruler and compass and their historical development. The work links the theory of incommensurability to secondary‑school curricula, offering classroom activities that combine history of mathematics, geometry and algebra to improve students’ grasp of irrational numbers.
