Brazilian Supreme Court justices face scrutiny amid political shifts
Following recent presidential election results, the political focus within Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) has shifted. While Alexandre de Moraes appears to have gained political stability, Justices Kassio Nunes Marques and André Mendonça are facing increased pressure from colleagues.
Justice Nunes Marques is facing calls for investigation regarding his participation in a judgment involving court-ordered debts (precatórios) that allegedly benefited banker Daniel Vorcaro. Investigations have reportedly uncovered the existence of the ‘Turma do KN’, a group alleged to have acted in the interests of the ‘Master’ case while maintaining ties to individuals close to the minister.
Justice André Mendonça faces accusations of directing investigations within the ‘Master’ case specifically against Alexandre de Moraes, while allegedly deprioritizing evidence involving other members of the Court. Additionally, Mendonça is facing political resistance from Davi Alcolumbre, the President of Congress. Supporters of Moraes argue that no criminal conduct has been identified in his official actions, suggesting that Nunes Marques and Mendonça exceeded the bounds of internal judicial disputes by utilizing the ‘Master’ case to target Moraes.
