Brazilian Supreme Court justices face scrutiny over pending legal decisions
Supreme Court of Brazil (STF) justices are facing delays in resolving significant legal matters. Justice Alexandre de Moraes has held actions regarding the constitutionality of the dosimetria law for 177 days. This law, enacted after Congress overturned a presidential veto, proposes sentence reductions for those convicted in the January 8, 2023, attacks. While Moraes issued an injunction suspending the law, he has not yet submitted the case to the full court for a final ruling. The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) argues the law should apply immediately, while the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) seeks to maintain the suspension.
Separately, Justice Cármen Lúcia has held a criminal case against Senator Sergio Moro for 170 days. Moro was indicted following allegations that he slandered Justice Gilmar Mendes by suggesting judicial decisions could be purchased. Moro’s defense maintains the comments were made in jest during a social event. The case has not yet entered the evidence production stage.
