Brazilian survey shows high interest in free plastic surgery

A survey commissioned by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) and conducted by Datafolha reveals that approximately one in three Brazilians would be interested in undergoing plastic surgery if the procedures were free of charge. Specifically, 19% of the 2,086 respondents expressed “some interest,” while 12% expressed “much interest.”

Women showed a significantly higher level of interest compared to men, with 41% expressing interest versus 22% of men. Data also indicates that women comprise the vast majority of those who have already undergone such procedures; among medium and large-scale aesthetic surgeries performed last year, 88% of patients were female.

Medical experts, including psychiatrist Arthur Kaufman from the University of São Paulo (USP), have raised concerns regarding the psychological motivations behind these desires. The findings highlight potential links between social media influence and body image distortions, such as body dysmorphic disorder, where individuals perceive flaws that are not visible to others.
