Brazilian theater sees rise in musicals and international exchanges
The Brazilian theater scene is experiencing diverse developments, ranging from international cultural exchanges to a surge in musical productions. In Salvador, the Museu de Arte da Bahia is hosting ‘O Rinoceronte’, a production by the Lisbon-based group Teatro da Garagem. Directed by Carlos J. Pessoa, the play is based on the work of Eugène Ionesco and serves as an anti-fascist allegory regarding extremism and the loss of individuality.
Simultaneously, Brazil is seeing a significant rise in the popularity of musicals. A recent example is ‘Feliz Ano Velho – O Musical’, an adaptation of Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s autobiographical book. The production, which premiered in São Paulo, explores Paiva’s life following an accident that left him tetraplegic, set to the music of 1980s Brazilian rock icons. This follows a growing trend of biographical musicals in the country, including productions centered on figures such as Tim Maia, Elis Regina, and Rita Lee.
