Brazilian theatrical productions highlight regional history and identity

Various theatrical productions are touring Brazil, highlighting regional history and Afro-Brazilian identity. In Rio de Janeiro, the musical spectacle “Gungas, Marimbas e Urucungos em Encantorias Ancestrais” will hold its final performance at Teatro Carlos Gomes on September 9. The production features over 50 young quilombola participants from Maranhão, showcasing Capoeira Angola alongside traditions such as tambor de crioula and bumba meu boi.

In Fortaleza, the Grupo Pavilhão da Magnólia presents “JARARACA[S]” at the Centro Cultural Banco do Nordeste (CCBNB) on September 4, 5, 10, and 11. The play explores the final days of Jararaca, a member of Lampião’s gang, investigating themes of state violence, memory, and the historical erasure of certain figures. The production draws parallels between historical conflicts and contemporary social issues.
