Brazilian cities launch LED lighting, water supply upgrades and new public event rules

Municipal governments across Brazil announced a series of public‑service initiatives. In Apucarana, Mayor Rodolfo Mota reported that the 100 % LED lighting program will replace more than 9,000 street lamps, covering the entire city and costing roughly R$ 5.8 million. Várzea Grande’s task‑force reactivated three water wells, adding over 1.5 million litres per day to the supply network and earmarked R$ 60 million for further infrastructure upgrades. Mariana’s mayor, Juliano Duarte, introduced stricter regulations for events, requiring 30‑day advance applications, security barriers, metal detectors and liability agreements after recent homicides at a private gathering. Maringá began construction of a 150‑metre road link in its north region to improve traffic flow. Botucatu launched a fiscal regularisation program offering up to 90 % discounts on municipal tax penalties. In São João da Serra Negra, a municipal decree created a special social‑interest zoning to enable a new low‑income housing project. Cruzeiro do Sul set dates for its 9th Festival da Farinha and imposed a ban on glass‑bottled drinks to enhance public safety. These actions illustrate a broader push by local authorities to modernise infrastructure, improve safety and expand affordable housing.
