Brazilian towns confront irregular waste collection and dumpster shortages

Residents and merchants in Itaipava, a tourist district of Petrópolis, have complained of an unreliable garbage‑collection schedule. The local group UNITA (Unidos por Itaipava) says trucks serve some areas intermittently, leaving waste to accumulate for days. The municipality recently signed a R$ 38 million contract without a competitive bidding process, but the new agreement has not resolved operational problems, and the lack of a stable service is affecting both locals and visitors.

In Santa Rita do Sapucaí, inhabitants report difficulty obtaining dumpsters for construction debris and garden waste. The shortage forces some to leave material on streets, exposing them to fines despite the absence of available public services. Local leaders are urging the authorities to expand dumpster availability, provide temporary disposal options, and adopt a more flexible approach to avoid penalising residents who try to comply with waste‑management regulations.
