Brazil's June Violeta campaign educates seniors on rights and violence prevention

A series of events across Brazil marked the June Violeta campaign, a national initiative to raise awareness of violence against elderly people. Municipalities including São José do Cedro (SC), Sorocaba (SP), Cuiabá (MT), Nilópolis (RJ) and Pato Bragado (MG) organised talks, workshops and certification ceremonies.

Activities focused on informing seniors about legal rights, the many forms of abuse—physical, psychological, financial, neglect—and how to report incidents through hotlines such as 165 and Disque 100. Officials and prosecutors highlighted risks of predatory lending and urged vigilance over financial contracts. In Sorocaba, the city council presented certificates to long‑term care facilities that completed mandatory registration under the Estatuto do Idoso, enabling continued operation and access to government benefits.

The campaign also promoted community engagement through round‑tables at senior centers, distribution of informational leaflets, and symbolic actions like planting flowers. The collective effort aims to strengthen protection networks, improve reporting mechanisms, and ensure dignified aging for Brazil’s growing elderly population.
