Brazilian towns launch fire‑prevention drives as dry‑season smoke spreads

The municipal government of Nova Olímpia started a public awareness campaign to curb illegal burns during the dry season. Officials warned residents that lighting fires on land, yards, dry leaves or waste can quickly ignite, threatening homes, vegetation and health, especially for children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions. The campaign urges people to keep properties clean, dispose of waste properly and report any fire outbreaks.

In the coastal town of Marataízes, civil‑defense authorities issued health advisories after dense smoke from a large forest fire in the neighboring Campo Acima area enveloped the municipality. Residents were told to keep doors and windows closed, avoid outdoor activity, use N95‑type masks when outside, stay hydrated and give special care to those with pre‑existing respiratory diseases. Traffic on the main road was halted due to reduced visibility. Both municipalities emphasized community cooperation to protect lives, property and air quality during the ongoing dry period.
