Brazilian towns launch waste‑pickup and food‑distribution drives

In the city of Canela, Rio Grande do Sul, the municipal government organized an extra “bota‑fora” bulky‑waste collection on Saturday, covering the neighborhoods of São Luiz and Jardim das Fontes. Residents were able to leave furniture, appliances and electronics for disposal, while items such as tires, tiles and ceramics were excluded. The operation was coordinated by the city's Secretarias de Meio Ambiente e Urbanismo and Obras, Serviços Urbanos e Agricultura.

In Apucarana, Paraná, the municipal “Feira Verde” program distributed more than eight tonnes of fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes to 1,443 families during July. In exchange, 32.7 tonnes of recyclable materials were collected from 25 neighborhoods. The initiative links food security with recycling, supports family farmers and generates income for waste‑picker workers.
