Brazilian vegetable prices fluctuate amid rain and El Niño impacts

In Feira de Santana, Bahia, local traders reported that recent rains drove down prices of leafy vegetables such as cilantro, parsley and lettuce, with some items falling from R$5 to R$3 per bunch. Tomato prices, after a brief dip, rose again to about R$5 per bunch, with wholesale boxes varying from R$20 to R$50 depending on quality.

In the state of Goiás, officials warned that the El Niño climate pattern could lift food prices in the second half of the year. Data from the Central de Abastecimento (Ceasa) showed June price increases of 40% for peppers, 33% for onions, 20% for beans, and over 50% for bananas and papaya. Water‑intensive crops such as lettuce, cucumber and pumpkin are expected to see further price pressure.
