Brazilian Volleyball Confederation implements new trans eligibility rules

The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) has announced new eligibility rules for female categories in national indoor and beach volleyball competitions. Following International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines, athletes must now provide genetic testing proving the absence of the SRY gene, which is associated with male biological development.

The policy will take effect for the 2026/27 Superliga A and B seasons, the 2026 Supercup, the 2027 Brazil Cup, and various beach volleyball circuits. While refusing the screening is not a disciplinary infraction, athletes who cannot prove eligibility will be barred from competing.

The decision directly impacts Tifanny Abreu, a prominent transgender athlete currently playing for Osasco. Abreu expressed that the rule effectively ends her professional career and passion for the sport, noting her ten-year history in women's volleyball. Brazilian national team captain Gabi Guimarães also voiced support for the athlete, criticizing the lack of explanation regarding the implementation of the rules.

Medical experts explain that the SRY gene is fundamental in determining biological sex during fetal development. The presence of the gene typically leads to the development of testes, while its absence leads to the development of ovaries.
