Brazilian volunteer captured by Russian forces in Ukraine

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that 23‑year‑old Herik Ferreira Soares, a native of Castanhal in Pará, was captured by Russian military forces while fighting for Ukraine. Soares recorded a video after his capture, saying he had been misled by false promises of back‑line work and was instead sent to the front lines. He thanked Russian soldiers for providing medical assistance and expressed remorse for joining the war.

Brazil’s embassy in Moscow is maintaining contact with Soares' family and providing consular assistance. The Itamaraty is seeking additional information from local authorities. The ministry reiterated its 2025 warning against Brazilians enlisting in foreign armed forces, emphasizing the risks and urging citizens to refuse such offers.
