Brazilian women create network to defend climate and territories

The Observatório do Clima launched the "Defensoras por Defensoras" program, bringing together 36 women activists from across Brazil to strengthen climate justice and territorial protection. Participants exchange experiences, receive training and build a support network for environmental advocacy.

Among the defenders is Sara Marques, who lives in the Caranguejo Tabaiares community of Recife (PE). She describes how unchecked urban expansion has canalised the Rio Capibaribe, turning a once‑diverse fishery into a shrimp‑only operation and altering local livelihoods.

In Santa Catarina, Mirian Prochnow co‑founded the Associação de Preservação do Meio Ambiente e da Vida (Apremavi) after witnessing the loss of Atlantic Forest near her childhood home. The group now runs a nursery producing over a million native seedlings annually for forest restoration.

The network also includes Valdineia Sauré (Val Munduruku) from Pará, who links indigenous rights with climate action, highlighting the broader social dimensions of territorial defense.
