Toinha Cavalcante's Mandate Threatened Amid Gender Quota Fraud in Acre
The Regional Electoral Court of Acre (TRE‑AC) confirmed that the Progressive Party (PP) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) committed gender‑quota fraud in the 2024 municipal elections in Assis Brasil. The court voted unanimously to cancel the parties' Demonstratives of Regularity (DRAPs), invalidating all votes obtained by the two parties and ordering an immediate recalculation of the municipal council seats.
As a result, the mandate of councilwoman Toinha Cavalcante (PP) is at risk of being revoked, even though she was not personally involved in the irregularities. Federal deputy Socorro Neri denounced the decision as a “legal and political contradiction,” arguing that women elected by popular vote should not be punished for party misconduct. Neri noted that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is moving toward a stance that protects the mandates of women who were not part of the fraud, and she pledged to continue advocating for the councilwoman’s right to remain in office.
The ruling also confirmed an eight‑year ineligibility period for Assis Brasil mayor Jerry Correia Marinho, starting from the 2024 election.
