Romeu Zema picks Eduardo Girão as vice‑presidential candidate

The Novo party announced that former Minas Gerais governor Romeu Zema has chosen Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo‑CE) as his running mate for the 2026 Brazilian presidential election. The decision creates a ticket composed entirely of Novo members and ends weeks of speculation about possible alliances with other parties. Girão will abandon his pre‑candidacy for the governorship of Ceará to join the national campaign. Zema praised Girão as a “decent, clean‑record” politician who has consistently opposed what he calls the “intocáveis” and the Supreme Court, saying he is the right partner to lead a “better Brazil.”

The party confirmed the choice after internal talks with party president Eduardo Ribeiro, and the announcement was reported by several outlets. Former presidential candidate Ciro Gomes publicly congratulated Girão, noting that the move could affect the electoral dynamics in Ceará. The selection has been described as a strategic step for Novo ahead of the upcoming campaign.
