Brazil's 2026 presidential race sees new candidates officially nominated

On 26 June, the Brazilian party Unidade Popular held its national convention at the University of Zumbi dos Palmares in São Paulo and formally nominated dentist Samara Martins as its presidential candidate, with port worker union leader Raquel Brício as her running mate. The duo presented a platform centered on combating violence against women and advancing workers' rights.

The convention week also saw other parties announce their tickets for the 2026 presidential election. The Liberal Party (PL) confirmed former deputy Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential bid, backed by Argentine President Javier Milei, while former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro’s candidacy was being formalized. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) launched Ronaldo Caiado’s pre‑candidacy, and the New Party prepared to endorse governor Romeu Zema. Additional moves included the PT’s endorsement of Fernando Haddad in São Paulo and the Republicanos’ support for Tarcísio de Freitas’s re‑election bid as São Paulo governor.
