Brazil's aging population drives fitness and silver economy growth
Brazil is experiencing a significant demographic shift as the population ages, driving new trends in the fitness and economic sectors. According to the Fitness Brasil 2026 Sectoral Panorama, aging with autonomy has become a primary motivator for gym members. Many practitioners prioritize long-term independence and quality of life over social media influence, with approximately 45% driven by personal will and 23% by preventive health.
This shift is supported by IBGE data, which shows that people aged 60 and older already represent 15.8% of the Brazilian population. Experts from the research hub Data8 emphasize that this demographic, often referred to as the ‘silver economy,’ should be viewed as an economic driver rather than a cost. Individuals over 50 are active consumers, investors, and workers who often manage multiple income streams, including salaries, freelance work, and investments.
Projections suggest that by 2070, the population over 60 could reach 37.8% of Brazil, totaling approximately 75.3 million people. As life expectancy continues to rise, businesses are increasingly adapting services to meet the needs of this growing and financially active segment.
