Brazil's ANPD establishes AI center to strengthen technological oversight
The Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) is establishing an internal artificial intelligence center to enhance its technical capacity. Managed by the Technological Innovation Superintendency, the center aims to develop regulatory expertise in infrastructure and specialized personnel training. This move is intended to help the agency analyze complex systems, such as generative AI and automated decision-making, and to understand the risks associated with large-scale personal data usage.
The ANPD is currently monitoring processes related to the use of personal data for training generative AI models and is tracking the unauthorized creation of sexualized images.
Separately, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, through the National Secretariat for Digital Rights (Sedigi), has emphasized that data protection is a pillar for advancing AI within the financial sector. Officials advocate for a risk-based regulatory model, similar to the General Data Protection Law (LGPD), to prevent malicious use of technology while fostering economic advantages. Discussions also involve the Brazilian AI Plan (PBIA) and legislative efforts like Bill 2338/2023 to establish a coordinated governance system.
