Brazil's arms sector hit by US gun policy and hosts major fair

Experts warn that a proposed relaxation of U.S. gun‑sale regulations under the Trump administration could make it easier for Brazilian criminal groups to obtain illegal firearms, as more than half of seized rifles in southeastern Brazil trace back to the United States. The changes include allowing purchases through the mail, shortening record‑keeping periods for sellers and loosening background‑check requirements.

At the same time, Brazil’s domestic defence industry showcased its growth at the Shot Fair Brazil, the largest arms exhibition in Latin America. Officials reported a defence sector turnover of about US$ 60 billion annually, with exports valued at US$ 3.1 billion in 2025, a 74 % increase over the previous year. Major exporters such as Embraer, Avibras, Taurus and Imbel highlighted their roles, while the fair underscored Brazil’s expanding presence in global arms markets.
