Brazil's August Pilgrimages Draw Thousands of Faithful to Bahia and Goiás

From 2 to 15 August, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Help in Arraial d’Ajuda, Porto Seguro, celebrates its 475th anniversary with a series of masses, processions and devotional events that attract thousands of pilgrims from across Bahia and other Brazilian states. The festival, organized by the sanctuary and local diocesan groups, also boosts the local economy through increased demand for lodging, food and services.

At the same time, a support centre for pilgrims has been opened on the GO‑237 highway in Niquelândia, Goiás, to serve the Romaria of Our Lady of Abadia de Muquém. Operating 24 hours a day from 3 to 15 August, the centre expects to assist about 30 000 participants, providing water, snacks, medical aid, showers, Wi‑Fi and a chapel. The facility is run by local volunteer organisations in partnership with municipal authorities and emergency services.
