Brazil's B3 reports surge in retail investors and BDR trading

Brazilian stock exchange B3 said retail participation is hitting new highs. The number of individual accounts rose to 6.45 million in June 2026 – the highest level in five years – and retail investors now hold about 19.5% of all shares, up from an average of 14.9% over the previous decade. According to an Itaú BBA report, retail inflows totaled R$ 2.8 billion year‑to‑date, though June saw a net outflow of R$ 600 million.

BDRs (Brazilian Depositary Receipts) are also gaining momentum. Daily BDR trading volume reached roughly R$ 1.3 billion, a 40% increase over the prior year, with more than 800 foreign‑company stocks available. The recent SpaceX BDR debut moved about R$ 150 million in a single trading day, underscoring investor appetite for global tech names alongside domestic giants such as Google, NVIDIA and Tesla. Nearly one‑million investors now use BDRs, with 60% of the trading volume coming from non‑resident participants.

Analysts note that the growing share of domestic investors is shifting market dynamics: the Brazilian market is becoming more sensitive to local fiscal, monetary and political developments, especially the upcoming presidential election in October.
