Brazil's Bolsa Família faces mass cancellations for thousands of families

In July, Brazil’s Bolsa Família cash‑transfer program began a review that could exclude families who exceed the monthly per‑person income ceiling of R$218, have outdated CadÚnico registrations, or fail to meet health and education conditionalities such as vaccinations, prenatal care, nutrition monitoring and school attendance.

In the municipality of Santarém, Pará, 758 families—about half of them living in riverine communities—have been flagged for non‑compliance and risk benefit suspension or cancellation. The city’s 45,426 beneficiaries are urged to submit administrative appeals and regularize required documentation to avoid loss of support.

The program’s “Proteção” rule allows families whose income rises to receive half the usual amount for up to a year, but continued non‑compliance may lead to alerts, blockages, suspensions and ultimately cancellation.
