Brazil's Bolsa Família program faces continuation pledge and 2026 funding hurdle

Pre‑presidential candidate Renan Santos of the Missão party said he will keep Brazil's Bolsa Família program for those who need it, while proposing new "exit doors" that would link beneficiaries to job‑creation initiatives. Santos stressed that the cash transfer would remain for the most vulnerable, but active‑age recipients would be encouraged to move into paid community‑service roles.

At the same time, the federal government is seeking congressional approval for a supplemental credit of 185.5 billion reais to finance Bolsa Família and other social benefits in 2026. The proposal, which also covers the BPC and the Lifetime Monthly Income, must clear a majority in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to meet constitutional debt‑limit rules. Without this backing, the continuation of the programme’s monthly payments could be jeopardised.
