Brazil's Bolsa Família suspension results in permanent loss of payments
The Ministry of Development and Social Assistance (MDS) explains that when a Bolsa Família family is suspended, payments cease and the missed months are not paid retroactively; the money for that period is permanently lost.
The programme distinguishes three sanctions: a block temporarily holds payments and may be released after the family regularises its CadÚnico data; a suspension stops payments entirely with no retroactive credit; a cancellation ends the benefit, requiring a new registration. To avoid suspension, families must keep their CadÚnico registration up‑to‑date, ensure school attendance, vaccinations, health monitoring and keep income below the permitted level.
