Brazil's .br domain reaches record 6 million registrations
The Brazilian country code top-level domain, .br, has reached a record 6 million registered web addresses. Managed by the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), this milestone marks the most significant growth in the domain's history, with over 500,000 new registrations recorded between the start of 2026 and early October.
Brazil currently ranks sixth globally among more than 300 existing country codes. The .br domain is characterized by high diversity, offering nearly 150 different categories and 11 thematic groups, such as 'gov.br' for government entities, 'org.br' for organizations, and various professional or regional subdomains.
Demi Getschko, president of NIC.br, noted that the achievement reflects both the scale of the domain and an internationally recognized management model. The cost for registration remains at R$ 40, a price that has not been adjusted since 2017. The domain's history dates back to 1989, when it was delegated to the research network operated by Fapesp.
