Brazil's consolidated public sector recorded a primary deficit of R$55.3 billion in June 2026, up from R$47.1 billion in the same month a year earlier. Over the 12 months to June, the primary deficit totaled R$157.2 billion, equivalent to 1.19 % of GDP.
Including interest payments of R$110.7 billion (8.8 % of GDP), the nominal deficit for June was R$166 billion, and the 12‑month nominal deficit reached R$1.31 trillion (9.99 % of GDP). The net public debt rose to 68.5 % of GDP (about R$9 trillion) and gross public debt to 81.9 % of GDP (about R$10.8 trillion). A loss of R$9.3 billion on foreign‑exchange swap operations, after a gain of R$20.9 billion in June 2025, contributed to the fiscal pressure. The average cost of Brazil’s federal debt over the past 12 months climbed to 12.68 % per year, the highest level since 2016.
