Brazil's CadÚnico Update Impacts Bolsa Família, BPC and Energy Discount

The federal government has tightened the link between the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) database and the Tarifa Social de Energia. Starting now, the name and address on a household’s electricity bill must match the information registered in CadÚnico or the INSS system. If the data do not align, the social electricity discount can be suspended, potentially raising the bill by about R$ 80. The same verification applies to the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (B (BPC); an outdated CadÚnico can also block or suspend BPC payments. Updates to CadÚnico are required every two years and must be made in person at the nearest CRAS office, although beneficiaries can check their records online via the Meu INSS portal.

Separately, the Bolsa Família program for 2026 has been detailed. The benefit provides a base amount of R$ 600 per family, with additional payments of R$ 150 for children aged 0‑6 and R$ 50 for children or adolescents aged 7‑18, pregnant women and nursing mothers. Eligibility requires registration in CadÚnico and a per‑capita family income of up to R$ 218. Payments are made through the Caixa Tem app according to a schedule based on the last digit of the beneficiary’s NIS. The program also enforces conditionalities in education and health, and failure to meet them can lead to warnings, temporary blocks, or cancellation. Both pieces stress that keeping CadÚnico information current is essential to avoid interruptions in these crucial social benefits.
