Brazil's Celesc expands smart meters as Copel tariff rises 20.5%

Santa Catarina's electricity distributor Celesc announced that smart meters now serve 50% of consumers in Florianópolis, after a prior 100% rollout in Araranguá. The upgrade, part of a R$5 billion modernization plan for 2023‑2026, involved an investment of more than R$116 million and offers remote reading, automatic reconnection, fraud detection and other service improvements at no cost to customers.

The national regulator Aneel approved a periodic tariff revision for Copel Distribuição, effective 24 March. The adjustment yields an average 20.51% increase for customers, with high‑voltage users facing a 21.87% rise and low‑voltage users 19.85%. Copel serves roughly 5.32 million electricity consumers across Brazil.
