Brazil's Chamber of Deputies authorizes urgency for dozens of bills

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approved an urgent voting regime for 18 legislative proposals, allowing them to be debated directly on the floor without prior committee review. In a separate vote, the Chamber granted urgency to PL 957/2024, which amends the Mining Code to accelerate authorizations for small‑scale mining operations. The bill has drawn criticism from environmentalists and opposition lawmakers who warn it could weaken oversight and repeat past harms seen in the Yanomami region.

Separately, the director‑general of Brazil's National Mining Agency noted that, despite the passage of a critical‑minerals bill that sets incentives and financing mechanisms, the country still lacks the necessary logistics, ports, railways, and processing facilities to develop its mineral potential.
