Brazil’s Chamber pushes government bill to end 6×1 work schedule

The president of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos‑PB), scheduled a vote for next week on a government‑proposed bill that would end the 6×1 work regime. The bill, presented under urgency, mirrors the text of the PEC approved by the Chamber in May and would reduce the weekly workweek to 40 hours with two guaranteed rest days, phased over a 14‑month transition.

By placing the project under urgency, the Chamber has blocked all other deliberations, forcing the Senate to act. Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União‑AP) will have 45 days to schedule the text after it is dispatched, under pressure to avoid further legislative gridlock. The move is linked to the government’s electoral agenda, seeking to finalize the reform in the first half of the year.

The legislation also aims to free the Chamber’s agenda to address other priorities such as AI regulation, a micro‑entrepreneur income‑ceiling adjustment, and rural debt refinancing.
